THANK YOU

Dear All
Do Digital Realities is ten years old and we would like to thank you all for your support. Ten years, a milestone that the IMAGINARIANS are very proud of. It’s been an amazing journey and I'm personally looking forward to celebrating 2017 in style. We’re planning four exciting events this year - every three months we’re going to do something special.
From an evening of drinks with our clients to who knows what?! Watch this space and we’ll update you soon. The most important thing, we want to enjoy ourselves reminiscing over the past ten years and begin planning for the future.

Party time, 10 years celebration. First of many! Drink up #pixelsweat - Spherical Image - RICOH THETA

A PERSONAL JOURNEY

Highs and lows - over the past ten years I'm pleased to say there have been considerably more highs than lows. I would like to share the thoughts that have shaped our business. I have always wanted to run my own company. The past ten years have been truly amazing. In all that time, I have never not wanted to go to work. I love running Do Digital, walking into a packed studio and watching my guys always makes me smile. I always take time to reflect and appreciate what we have created. Since day one I have worked tirelessly to create an exciting and dynamic company and I think it’s safe to say we have done exactly that.
The re-brand, recruitment and our unique approach to all things 3D has allowed us to reach new heights. We have big plans and we can’t wait to share them with you. Our client base has developed and we’re engaging with more prestigious brands. I have learnt so much, our technical knowledge combined with our commercial awareness is unrivalled. We’re now an award-winning company and we look forward to using this new-found success and inspiring our staff and customers.

PEOPLE

This has been the hardest and most challenging part of running a business. Understanding that not everyone shares your dream and has your level of commitment.
"Why should they? They only work for you. It’s not their business.
Sound advice from my closest friends and colleagues. I’ve learnt to try and nurture the very best talent and try to inspire the rest to follow. Not always with success I must add. Gut instinct and experience has helped and as I grow older my ability to judge and evaluate situations has improved.
I now spot cracks sooner and act quickly to address them. I have learnt to trust my staff, within certain parameters of course. Make them feel part of the company’s development. Share the success and celebrate together. Understand that staff will leave and don’t take it personally. Don’t be afraid and know that people will let you down and copy your business model when they leave. Customers are not your best friends. Some are friends but business is business they will move on looking for alternative suppliers. Some will leave to save a few pennies, but most of them will come back to you in my experience.
When your staff leave, work hard to fill the void. Reassure your suppliers that it won't affect your work and service. Tell them your plans and how you intend to deliver. One of the hardest things to deal with is legacy from past staff. Even though they leave the company's reputation can still be tarnished. They leave and set up as a direct competitor with a clean slate full of promises as you struggle to brush off their effects of leaving.
Stay true to your beliefs and rise above it. I've got high expectations for my company and I can honestly say I have never let them slip. Yes sometimes things do not go to plan. I believe I've learnt that all you can do is try your best. When you have great staff look after them. Invest in them and their skills. Let them grow. Keep nurturing talent and always have a steady stream of potential staff members. We have created the Do Academy to make this a reality, teaching the skills required to be an IMAGINARIAN.

WORK

Don’t look at other people's work too much and worry that yours isn’t as good as theirs. Projects online never come with a caveat. How long did this take? Personal portfolio projects take months to create. The commercial realities we face every day rarely allow you to indulge yourself creating truly inspirational work. It’s all about balance. There are many factors which need to be considered when delivering work. A great IMAGINARIAN has many qualities. Getting the balance between quality, service and delivery. These skills are never illustrated in an image, animation or project. Invest in people, train them and share the knowledge. I used to be precious with our skills, but as the internet has developed the ability to learn online has made this readily available.

FAMILY

Balance, Something I’m still working on. I don’t switch off as much as I should. As a director things move quickly. A problem this week will be long forgotten next week. Why do we work? To provide for our family and secure their future. With this in mind taking risks has been more difficult. As an only shareholder I would have liked to have shared the decision making. An alternative perspective on things always helps. Knowing that someone is thinking whilst you sleep sounds good. This comes with its own challenges. Are you both working to the same goal and effort? That said I wouldn't change anything. Who knows how things could have been if I'd made different choices. We're in a good place and I'm enjoying myself. I love running Do I've looked after it and it looks after me.
SKILLS

Problems are solved quicker. I don't have all the answers all of the time. However I do feel that in the past ten years I dealt with most things. Knowing that the company still carries on regardless has been a helpful lesson. The business is bigger than one individual. I seem to see things coming a lot sooner making the appropriate adjustments. Moving things around to adapt and knowing today something will come along that challenges you. As I gain more experience there seem to be less issues to deal with. I'm more consistent, my staff have no doubt in what we're trying to achieve. This allows me to work on the business and keep developing our systems and proposition.
CELEBRATE

It's easier than it sounds. To fully celebrate a particular part of the business whether it's an award or securing a great project. As a director your mind is always thinking of the other issues. People, capital, investment and competitors.
NEXT TIME

I wish I’d networked more locally. I love living in Wales but never thought of us as a Welsh business. I've never relied on favours or grants to develop the business. That being said I wish I’d involved local authorities and colleges more. Our pedigree gives us credence and we're now engaging with universities etc. Whether it’s through teaching, collaborating or just chatting - it's good to talk..
THE GOOD

Now that I've achieved my first ten years I feel a sense of relief. I have a new found freedom because no matter what happens, setting up and running a business on my own for 10 years is a great achievement. This doesn't mean we throw caution to the wind and take risks, far from it. I can't wait for the next ten years pursuing new avenues with DO. Who knows how things will progress. I know it's going to be fun. We're setting up company rewards schemes and looking to keep staff long term. Our industry is young and so is our staff demographic. As we mature so will DO’s staff which is a great thing.
CGI, VR and our other 3D tools are here to stay. Technology progresses and so will we.

THE FUTURE

We’re fully committed to developing talent and DO will be recruiting. To help with this we’ve created the DO Academy. Designed to develop the next batch of IMAGINARIANS. We continue to offer 3D workshops, designed to inspire our customers. During the workshop, you will be immersed in cutting edge 3D technologies and their applications. We have some amazingly exciting projects on and we can’t wait to share them. Our Virtual Reality (VR) and real-time projects are really turning heads. As we complete these projects we look forward to sharing them with you.
Our business will develop as a consultancy for all things 3D, helping our clients to embrace the possibilities of 3D. Maximising the potential their 3D collateral can give them. Helping them to engage with their customers.
Making 3D work for you.
IN SUMMARY

Do Digital Realities is looking forward to the future. Over the past 10 years DO has constantly evolved and is now stronger than ever. Making 3D work for your business is our goal. We will continue to develop our tools and we look forward to working with you soon. Here’s to the next 10 years!
I would like to thank my wife Claire, and my three children. Their support has been amazing. I would also like to thank my staff. Without your efforts we would not be where we are now. I'm looking forward to working with you more.
Thank you...
